Taking a Sitz Bath

Taking a Sitz Bath To Sooth Hemorrhoids

A Sitz Bath can be purchased at the pharmacy or drug store.  It can be given to you or purchased, as well at the hospital or a medical supply store.

1. Put all of the necessary supplies together so
they are conveniently near you for the bath.

2. Put the sitz bath in place (on the toilet or on the chair).  Make sure it is secure so it will not move or spill when you sit down.

3. Fill the tub with warm water.

4. Some of the sitz baths come with supplies when they are purchased. There may already be a "solution" bag and tube with it in the box.  The bag should be filled with water and hung from a hook higher than the toilet (the hospital uses an IV pole).  The bag will flow a continuous stream of water into the sitz bath and can be shut on or off with a clamp.

5. Any overflow, if on the toilet, will empty into the toilet.  If you are using a solution bag, the fluid will run continuously from the bag, as well, and out through the vents.  Use caution from over-filling it.

6. Upon instructions from your physician, you should see if you can add saline solution or salt.

7. Soak your bottom in the tub for 10 to 20 minutes or however long you have been instructed by your physician.

8. Upon finishing, DO NOT WIPE, but gently pat dry your area of discomfort.

9.  Discuss in detail with your physician, your technique and how many times you should take the sitz bath.
